MOVIE offerings (subject to change)
DUKALE’S DREAM (70 min.) Actor Hugh Jackman and his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, travel to Africa and meet a young coffee farmer. After spending time on the farm, Hugh realises the importance of fair-trade coffee and starts a company to work directly with the growers.
OMO CHILD (83 min.) For many generations people in the Omo Valley (tribal southwest Ethiopia) believed some children are cursed and that these 'cursed' children bring disease, drought and death to the tribe. The curse is called 'mingi' and mingi children are killed. Lale Labuko, a young educated man from the Kara tribe was 15 years old when he saw a child in his village killed and also learned that he had 2 older sisters he never knew who had been killed. He decided one day he would stop this horrific practice. Filmed over a five year period we follow Lale's journey along with the people of his tribe as they attempt to change an ancient practice.
TOWN OF RUNNERS (80 min.) Town of Runners is a feature documentary about young runners from the Ethiopian rural town of Bekoji, home to the current Olympic and World Champions Tirunesh Dibaba and Kenenisa Bekele. The film follows three children as they move from school track to national competition and from childhood to adulthood.
BILAL: A New Breed of Hero (animated, 105 min.) A thousand years ago, one boy with a dream of becoming a great warrior is abducted with his sister and taken to a land far away from home. Thrown into a world where greed and injustice rule all, Bilal finds the courage to raise his voice and make a change. Inspired by true events, this is a story of a real hero who earned his remembrance in time and history.
THE ATHLETE (92 min.) Running the streets of Rome in 1960, an unknown, barefooted Ethiopian man stunned the world by winning Olympic gold in the marathon. Overnight, Abebe Bikila became a sports legend. A hero in his own country and to the continent, Bikila was the first African to win a gold medal, and four years later in Tokyo would become the first person in history to win consecutive Olympic gold medals in the marathon.
Merkato and Raffle Sales will begin when we are sufficiently set up and ready. We will notify everyone via Remind when both are open, and of any other changes during the weekend.
